Not usually do guests attending weddings, banquets etc. talk about the furniture but in this case, it really is a talking point.
We have been busy over the last few months building 100, 4, 5 and 6 foot sweetchestnut and coppiced hazel benches for hire.
We build once a year for about three months in the spring using only the materials we have been able to source and coppice over winter. Once our annual supply has been used, that is the total number of pieces built for the year.
All materials are locally sourced from ethically managed sustainable, renewable sources. Some Hazel from ancient forest coppice regeneration work we are involved with.
These are not ordinary benches, they are individually hand crafted sculptures. Each one telling a story about the tree from which it was crafted, the processing and drying having taken place, scars from animal and insect interaction as well as from tools and machinery used in their processing and final crafting into furniture. Many of the bench tops have natural endges. There literally is our blood, sweat and tears in theses unique pieces of furniture.
The beautiful grain patters and figure of sweet chestnut contrasted with some staining from water and insect prevention treatments carried out during drying. We do not hide these features and often celebrate the uniqueness they bring to each piece.
The benches have solid fixed legs wedged into solid wood tops for a sturdy design and secure seating. They do not fold up.
All benches are sanded smooth on the top and edges and finished with our own blend of natural oils to enhance the colour and for protection. The coppiced hazel legs remain with bark on to help give a special, planted, of the place feel to the furniture particularly when used in a woodland setting.
"So they must be expensive to hire, right?"
Well no. We have tried to keep the price very competitive. For 2023 benches are £5 each to hire plus delivery/collection.
